Primary and Secondary School Students

The On Your Feet Challenge promotes an active lifestyle by encouraging students and their community to choose active transportation as a means of improving their physical and mental well-being.

Two ways of getting involved

Be a Team Leader

The person in charge signs up their team, encourages and motivates them throughout the Challenge, adds up the kilometers traveled by their team, and enters them on the online portal.

Participate in the Challenge

Students who join a team to participate in the Challenge must commit to using active transportation and doing their best to achieve the goals set.

Team Leader

Who can be a Team Leader?

Any primary or secondary student who wants to motivate those around them at school or at home to use active transportation more and, therefore, their car less often.

*This year, the Challenge is offered to primary and secondary schools in Quebec and to primary schools in Ontario.

Why organize the Challenge?

It’s a stimulating project for your class, it helps mitigate climate change, and it’s an opportunity to win exciting prizes. Talk to a staff member at your school about it!

Examples of activities to do with friends

Walk around the school at lunchtime or go to the movies by trott scooter or by bicycle on weekends.

Sign-up Steps

1

Create your profile on Collective Strides, a universal portal where you can sign up for the Challenge.

2

Check to see if your school is already signed up. If it isn’t, persuade a teacher or school staff member to sign up your school for the Challenge.

3

Talk about the Challenge to people around you, in class or at home. Come up with a team name and sign up for the Challenge. And don’t forget to set a goal of kilometers to cover!

4

Motivate your classmates or your friends to rack up as many active transportation kilometers as possible during the Challenge. Give them a digital or paper chart where they can log the kilometers they covered as part of trips outside of school, from October 16 to November 10.

5

Enter kilometers

At the end of the Challenge, participants must return the completed chart to their Team Leader, who will then add up the kilometers accumulated and enter them on the online portal.

Be part of a team

Who can participate?

Anyone in the primary and secondary school setting*: a teacher, friend, family member, student, etc.

The end goal

To cover the equivalent distance of going across Canada using active transportation, mitigate climate change, and be more active every day.

How to enter your kilometers

The Team Leader is responsible for entering the kilometers accumulated by their class or team. To make this task easier, participants will receive a digital or paper chart where they can log the kilometers they covered as part of trips outside of school, from October 16 to November 10. At the end of the Challenge, participants must return the completed chart to their Team Leader, who will then add up the kilometers accumulated.

Good active transportation opportunities and ideas for racking up miles

Travel by foot, by bicycle or by trott scooter to:

  • go to the grocery store, convenience store or pharmacy;
  • go to school or work;
  • walk the dog;
  • go to the park, cinema or store;
  • go to the daycare;
  • and more!

Participation Steps

1

Check to see if your school is already signed up for the On Your Feet Challenge. If it isn’t, persuade your teacher or a school staff member to sign it up for you.

2

Tell your group of friends or class about the Challenge. Find a team name and appoint a leader (teacher, friend, etc.). After completing your sign up and establishing your goal of kilometers to travel, determine how to track your kilometers: on the online portal or on the PDF file.

3

From October 16 to November 10, enter the kilometers traveled directly on the online portal. If you printed the chart in a PDF format, don’t forget to give it to your Team Leader.

4

Track the results of your school and your team throughout the Challenge. During the week of November 20, visit the Collective Strides website to discover the name of the winning team.

Badges

Earn 37 digital badges by racking up kilometers as you go across-Canada. Each badge has its own unique and fun design. It is sent to you to celebrate the progress you’ve made and the challenges you’ve overcome. Badges represent milestones along your journey across Canada.

ParticipACTION

Visit ParticipAction for inspiring ideas on how to encourage physical activity in your classroom. Each 15-minute video clip equals 2.5 km along your cross-Canada trip and another opportunity to earn badges along the way.

Artères communes

One account, a slew of opportunities to get moving! Adopting a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age reduces the risk of developing cancer. After more than 10 years of promoting active transportation among youth, the Canadian Cancer Society decided to launch Collective Strides in order to merge all of its active transportation initiatives. Sign for the On Your Feet Challenge and for any other Collective Strides initiative using this single account.
